In the midst of the mystique and splendor of our solar system lies Earth, a radiant gem nestled within the galaxy。 Verdant continents, rocky brown mountains, white glaciers, and sapphire-blue oceans weave together to create a world that pulses with life, inspiring awe at every glance。

Alongside Rolex, explorers venture deeper into mountains, tropical rainforests, and oceans, broadening humanity’s understanding of and reverence for Earth。 Among them are also scientists and researchers from China。

2024年新年伊始,勞力士將新一屆「雄才偉略」大獎頒發給了五位全球知名科學家和學者,其中包括中國科學家劉少創。遙感專家劉少創嘗試運用航天技術,拯救極度瀕危的野駱駝,對野生駱駝的棲息地變化帶來嶄新見解,成為首位獲得該獎的中國科學家。

At the start of 2024, Rolex awarded five globally recognized scientists and scholars, including Chinese scientist Liu Shaochuang。 A remote sensing expert, Liu has applied space technology to save critically endangered wild camels, offering groundbreaking insights into their changing habitats, and becoming the first Chinese scientist to receive this prestigious award。

三年前,勞力士與新浪新聞首次跨界合作,推出「向洋而生」欄目,講述了全球海洋環保先鋒們如何保護蔚藍海洋。2023年,勞力士攜手新浪新聞,講述探險家、科學家們保護地球的努力。2024年的今天,秉承「保護地球,恒動不息」精神,勞力士三載攜手新浪新聞,講述品牌支持探險家、科學家們在亞馬遜、非洲大陸探險、保護生態,以及席薇亞和「藍色使命」的故事。從而讓更多人關注地球現狀,共同創造可持續的未來。

Three years ago, Rolex collaborated with SINA News for the first time to launch the Living With the Ocean series—a compelling narrative highlighting global marine environmental protection pioneers committed to safeguarding the azure ocean。 In 2023, Rolex and SINA News continued sharing the endeavors of explorers and scientists to preserve the planet。 Today, in 2024, embodying the Perpetual Planet spirit, Rolex partners with SINA News for a third time to showcase that brand supports Amazon and the African conservation expeditions and the story of Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue, bringing greater awareness to Earth’s state and fostering a sustainable future together。

Witnessing the Amazon’s Revitalization: Thomas Peschak’s Photography Journey

亞馬遜雨林的水下世界神秘又充滿危險。人們很難抵達這裏,所以對亞馬遜的河流,以及水循環系統知之甚少。人們更不知道,這些河流,面臨何種威脅,以及如何影響整個地球的氣候及生態。

The underwater world of the Amazon rainforest is both mysterious and perilous。 Few can reach its depths, leaving us with limited knowledge of its rivers and water systems。 Even less is understood about the threats these waters face or how they affect the planet’s climate and ecosystems。

但這一切正在改變。國家地理學會和勞力士「保護地球·恒動不息」亞馬遜探險計劃,組成七支探險隊,深入亞馬遜河流域的個角落,瞭解這裏複雜的水下生態系統,研究保護對策。這項為其兩年的計劃剛剛圓滿結束。

But this is changing。 During the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition, seven teams of Explorers delved into every corner of the Amazon Basin, studying its complex underwater ecosystems and developing conservation strategies。 This Expedition just finished after 2 years。

攝影師帕斯查克跟拍了這些探險家團隊。他記錄、講述他們的成果。人們第一次直觀瞭解了這片土地的水下世界。

Photographer Thomas Peschak documented these teams, capturing their work and, for the first time, offering the world a direct glimpse of this underwater realm。

兩年、四十多地方、五十萬張照片

2 Years, 40 Locations, Half a Million Photos

湯馬斯・帕斯查克(Thomas Peschak)身穿潛水服,手握相機,等待那個粉紅色精靈到來。這是亞馬遜迪尼高河(Rio Negro)。這片漆黑的水域,是粉紅江豚的棲息地。現在正是豐水期,森林變成了一片水下花園。不久之後,江豚接連遊來。帕斯查克屏住呼吸,調整了相機鏡頭的位置,迅速按下快門。

As the pink spirit approaches, Thomas Peschak patiently waits in his wetsuit, holding his camera。 In the dark waters of the Rio Negro, the home of pink dolphins, the rainforest has transformed into an underwater garden in the rainy season。 Soon, the dolphins swam by, and Peschak, holding his breath, adjusted his camera and pressed the shutter。

湯馬斯・帕斯查克(Thomas Peschak)是國家地理學會探險家兼攝影師。他最初是一位海洋生物學家,當他意識到,在動物保護上,拍攝照片講述故事,比研究那些動物數據的作用更大時,他毅然投身於攝影事業。

Thomas Peschak, a National Geographic explorer and photographer, is a marin biologist who decided to become a fully committed photographer and use his images to advocate for the protection of wildlife and ecosystems。

In the beginning, his focus was on oceans and marine life, and through his images, people could directly see both the beauty and vulnerability of marine creatures。 But now, he faced a new challenge。 His lens turned to an unfamiliar frontier: the Amazon。

提起亞馬遜,人們首先想到鬱鬱蔥蔥的熱帶雨林。亞馬遜雨林,降雨量是全球之冠,有約300多萬種動植物物種,哺育著4000萬人口,也間接影響全球的氣候變化。

When people think of the Amazon, they picture its dense rainforest。 With the highest rainfall globally, this vast wilderness hosts over three million species of flora and fauna, sustains forty million people, and indirectly influences global climate patterns。

但人們卻對這裏的河流,以及水循環系統知之甚少。人們不知道它們是如何孕育出壯麗景觀,以及如何影響著整個地球的氣候以及生態。

Yet little is known about its rivers and water cycle。 How they give rise to magnificent landscapes and impact the climate and ecology of the whole globe is still a mystery。

帕斯查克拍攝的照片,讓人們第一次直觀瞭解這裏複雜的生態系統,以及氣候變化對它們的影響。

Peschak’s photographs offered the first visual understanding of the Amazon’s complex ecosystem and the effects of climate change upon it。

這次拍攝跟以前都不同。佩斯查克說:「這裏潛水時,我遇到的不是我習慣的鯊魚、鯨魚和海龜,而是水蟒、食人魚和樹懶。」 

This shoot was unlike any before。 「Instead of encountering sharks, whales, and sea turtles that I’m used to, I’ll be diving anacondas, piranhas, and sloths,」 Peschak says。 

每張照片的構圖、元素和故事,帕斯查克都需要反復構思。

Each photo’s composition, elements, and story required meticulous thought。

他在亞馬遜的加勒比海,拍攝到兩隻棱皮龜幼仔。他想告訴人們,亞馬遜的淡水,滋養了海洋生命。

In the Amazon’s Caribbean waters, he captured two delicate leatherback turtle hatchlings。 He wanted to convey the message that aquatic life is sustained by the fresh water of the Amazon。

海拔6000米的安第斯山脈,山上流出大量的水。他想用一張圖像來展示,冰川如何發揮水塔般的功能。於是,前景是絲滑的流水,遠處是茫茫雪山,這張構思巧妙的照片就誕生了。

At an altitude of 6,000 meters in the Andes, where torrents flow freely from the mountain’s heights, he sought to capture the glaciers‘ role as Earth’s natural water towers。 He came up with a masterfully conceived composition: the foreground’s silky water cascades against the sweeping, snow-laden peaks in the distance。

在下遊的森林洪水中,隨著水位上升,水生動物發生變化,江豚像鳥一樣飛過樹冠。他想將這條江豚和森林的關係聯繫起來。於是,帕斯查克成功捕捉到粉色江豚,在水下森林穿梭的照片。他說:「粉紅江豚遊過樹冠的速度之快有如雀鳥。」

Further downstream, in the floodplains of the Amazon forest, the rising waters transform aquatic life。 Pink river dolphins soar through submerged treetops like birds in flight。 Striving to reveal the deep bond between dolphin and forest, Peschak captured a fleeting moment—a pink dolphin weaving swiftly through the canopy of this underwater world。 「Dolphins fly through the canopy the way a bird would。」 he says。

熱帶安第斯山脈海拔6,349米(20,830英呎),帕斯查克努力多天,希望捕捉到一張照片,能夠「頌揚奧桑加特山的壯麗,並展示其關鍵的生態系統角色」。

On the Andean peak at 6.349 meters (20,830 feet), Peschak labored for days to capture an image that he said 「celebrated the majesty of Nevado Ausangate and showed its critical ecosystem role。」

最後,他成功在晚上拍下高山在雲霧中若隱若現的美態。

Eventually, he succeeded in capturing the mountain’s ethereal beauty, as it peeked out from behind its heavy cover of clouds。

兩年時間,帕斯查克在野外,跟隨七支探險隊,曆時大約400多天。去了四十個地方,拍了50萬張照片。

In just two years in the wild, Peschak accompanied 7 expedition teams, spending 400 days in the wild, journeying to 40 different locations, and taking half a million photographs。

因為亞馬遜許多渾濁水域非常危險,或難以前往。這個區域甚少有水下攝影作品。所以,這些照片一經發表,就引發轟動。人們也逐步瞭解如何能更好的保護這些地方,讓它能恒久持續地滋養生命,迎來美好的未來。

Many areas of the Amazon are murky, dangerous, or difficult to access, with few underwater images of these hidden worlds。 Accordingly, a sensation was born with every publication of his images。 Over time, they inspired a deeper understanding of how best to protect these realms so they may continue to nurture life and flourish for generations to come。

七支探險隊成果驚人

Staggering Discoveries from Seven Expeditions

國家地理學會和勞力士的合作始於2019年,「保護地球 恒動不息」計劃也在同一年啟動。此項目的目的是研究和記錄氣候和環境變化對世界上一些最關鍵但最脆弱的山脈、雨林和海洋系統的影響,並確定保護這些系統的解決方案。帕斯查克所拍攝記錄的這七支探險隊,均由勞力士「保護地球 恒動不息」計劃支持。

the National Geographic Society and Rolex’s partnership started in 2019, 「The Perpetual Planet」 project is also initiated in the same year。 This project aims to examine and document the impact of climate and environmental change on some of the world’s most critical yet fragile mountain, rainforest and ocean systems, and to identify solutions to protect them.The seven teams Peschak followed and photograghed were all part of the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition。

The initiative currently focuses on three key themes: Ocean conservation, Landscape protection and research in science and health to help ensure a perpetual planet。

The Perpetual Planet Initiative supports individuals and organizations that use science to address issues such as biodiversity loss and habitat degradation。

在此前,儘管亞馬遜雨林獲得不少關注,但人們對支持雨林的水循環系統卻知之甚少,更別提如何製定政策,保護它們了。

Until recently, despite the considerable attention the Amazon rainforest received, little was known about the water cycle systems sustaining it—let alone how to develop policies to protect them。

2022年,由國家地理學會帶領,勞力士支持的,「保護地球・恒動不息」亞馬遜探險計劃正式開始。國家地理探險家組成七支探險隊,深入亞馬遜河流域的各個角落,瞭解複雜的水下生態系統,並研究氣候變化對它們的影響。

Led by National Geographic and supported by Rolex, the Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition officially began in 2022, with National Geographic explorers forming seven teams to investigate the Amazon’s underwater ecosystems and understand how climate change impacts them。

Peschak’s camera documented each moment, sharing these discoveries with the world。

The rivers of the Amazon begin in the Andes。 Ruthmery Pillco Huarcaya and her team have been tracking Andean bear populations, seeking to understand their health and the impact they have on the cloud forest ecosystem, which serves as the primary source of rainfall for the Andes。

Monitoring mountain weather is crucial for predicting climate change and its impact on ecosystems。 Baker Perry and Tom Matthews scaled Nevado Ausangate, an Andean peak 6.349 meters (20,830 feet) above sea level, to install the highest weather station in the Tropical Andes。

安德莉莎・斯卡賓(Andressa Scabin)和勞力士雄才偉略大獎(Rolex Awards for Enterprise)得主祖奧・甘波斯・施華(João Campos-Silva),與當地社區合作,沿著茹魯阿河(Juruá River)研究及保護六種亞馬遜河川的主要巨型動物。

Andressa Scabin and Rolex Award for Enterprise laureate João Campos-Silva partnered with local communities along the Juruá River to study and protect six of Amazon’s key riverine megafauna。

他們是首批為世界體型最大的淡水魚巨骨舌魚,安裝GPS定位系統標籤的團隊。他們亦實施漁業協議,以恢復岌岌可危的巨骨舌魚族群。

They became the teams in the world to attach a GPS tag to an arapaima, the world’s largest scaled freshwater fish。 They implemented fisheries agreements to recover the imperiled populations of arapaima。

泰亞高・施華(Thiago Silva)與祖莉婭・塔巴雷斯(Julia Tavares)運用光學雷達(Light Detection and Ranging,LiDAR)技術,掃瞄森林中季節性淹沒的濕地,加深瞭解了這些樹木。二人也為這些濕地建立全球首個光學雷達模型。

Thiago Silva and Julia Tavares utilized Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology to scan seasonally flooded wetlands within the forest, gaining deeper insights into the trees in these areas。 Together, they are creating the world’s first 3D LiDAR models of these wetlands。

辛斯比・卡蒂羅-昆洛斯(Hinsby Cadillo-Quiroz)、詹妮弗・安吉爾-阿馬亞(Jennifer Angel-Amaya)及祖斯・韋斯(Josh West),研究人造池塘。這些之前動物們賴以生存的環境,被人類破壞,但現在,很多野生動物回歸了。他們也發現了有助於恢復環境的方法。

Hinsby Cadillo-Quiroz, Jennifer Angel-Amaya, and Josh West investigated artificial ponds—habitats once essential for wildlife but later damaged by human activity。 Now, many species are returning, and their research has uncovered promising solutions to aid with environmental restoration。

2024年勞力士國家地理年度探險家獎(Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year)得主費蘭度・特魯希略(Fernando Trujillo),數十年來一直致力保護亞馬遜淡水豚。

Fernando Trujillo, 2024 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year, has devoted decades to protecting the Amazon’s river dolphins。

他與瑪麗亞・希梅娜・瓦爾迪拉維杜華瑪(María Jimena Valderrama)一起,勘察跨越四個國家,共1,270公里的河流,並推測有1,366條江豚棲息於此。

With María Jimena Valderrama, they surveyed a 1,270-kilometer stretch of river spanning four countries, estimating a population of 1,366 river dolphins inhabiting these waters。

安傑洛・貝納迪諾(Angelo Bernardino)和瑪格麗特・阿沃・奧沃(Margaret Awuor Owuor)在河口調查紅樹林,並研究它們對當地社區的重要性。

At the river mouth, Angelo Bernardino and Margaret Awuor Owuor were surveying mangrove forests and examining their significance to local communities。

Bernardino made a starling discovery— the first mangrove forest known to science growing entirely in freshwater。

Each of these stories was captured and narrated through the lens of Peschak’s camera。

Amazon is Reborn

帕斯查克覺得,這些鮮為人知的水底世界,是他報導過最複雜的故事。

To Peschak, these hidden underwater realms are some of the most intricate stories he has ever told。

但也正是因為帕斯查克的拍攝和報導,亞馬遜正在遭遇的威脅,也正展示於眾:「支撐整個亞馬遜盆地的水生生態系統正遭受水壩、採礦、過度捕撈、汙染和氣候變化的威脅,」佩斯查克說。「它確實迫切需要得到關注。」 

Through his photography and storytelling, the Amazon’s unseen threats have come into sharp focus: 「The aquatic ecosystem that really underpins the entire Amazon basin is under siege from dams, mining, overfishing, pollution, and climate change,」 Peschak says, 「It really is in dire need of a spotlight。」

As dawn breaks, mangroves stretch their branches at the mouth of the Atlantic, pink river dolphins leap through Amazonian waters, blizzards swirl around Peru’s glaciers, and the Andean bear lets out a long call in the misty cloud forests。 There is no doubt: this remarkable, beautiful land and its ecosystems are being unveiled to the world as never before。
